BLACK TENGU // 黒天狗

The tengu is the spirit of the mountain: master of the sword, guardian of the forest and punisher of the arrogant. But not every tengu is the same. The legends speak of those who teach and those who lose themselves to pride. The Black Tengu is one of the latter: the wildest one, the one who stopped coming down to the village.

A bound spirit that's still watching.

In Japanese Buddhism, tengu were also said to be monks who gave in to arrogance. When they died, they became these long-nosed spirits, doomed to wander the mountains until they learned the humility they never had.

The seal on the forehead marks just that: something powerful that had to be contained. The red nose is all it kept from the ceremonial tengu; everything else turned to shadow.

It's not a costume. It's high-density resin in black and deep red. The red nose, gold fangs, golden swirls on the forehead and metal rings on the sides give it the look of ancient armor. It has an adjustable strap so you can wear it.

Together with the Red Tengu, it completes the pair of the mountain: the master and the one who lost his way.

The mountain has two faces. This is the one that's left out of the stories.

How to display it

Pair it with dark wood, a decorative katana or a full bookshelf: the Black Tengu wants a space with history.

If you own the Red Tengu, hang them together, facing each other. As a pair, they tell the whole legend.

Not every master comes down from the mountain.
