smoke-oni
SMOKE ONI // 煙鬼

In old paintings, the oni doesn't arrive on foot. It appears out of the storm, wrapped in smoke and black clouds, as if the sky itself had spat it out. No warning. No negotiation. It just arrives. The Smoke Oni is carved exactly like that: in the instant before it has fully left the mist.

Matte black. Dark red horns spreading outward. Not to decorate, but to guard. The idea was that any spirit trying to cross would first meet something more terrifying than itself.

In Japan, smoke is also a threshold. Incense smoke separates the world of the living from the world of spirits; the bonfires of Obon guide souls back home. The Smoke Oni lives right there, in what can't quite be seen.

It's not a costume. It's high-density resin in matte black, a surface that absorbs light instead of reflecting it. The horns are dark red, the clouds carved on the sides are grey, and the mouth has a black mesh grille with dark fangs above and below. Depending on the light — and on who's looking — the face seems to change.

It's not the mask that grabs the most attention.
